RULES & REGULATIONS

Tango Championship
General Rules Applicable to All Competitors

DEADLINES: July 25st, 2023

No Refunds after July 23rd, 2023.

Any level of dancer is welcome to participate in both categories. Competitors can only enter ONCE in each category. 
 

COUPLES TANGO DE PISTA CATEGORY

 

1. Only the 25 couples to register first in tango de pista category,  will be able to compete confirming their registration of $50 per person -including also the milonga night- to: Venmo: @Tomas-Galvan-2 or Zelle: tygtango@gmail.com. You must  put your full name, e-mail address and in which categories you want to compete.  If the competitors  register in both categories, the price is: $65 for each person.

2. A couple is composed of one person who leads and another who follows.

3. It will be a tandas of 3 tangos chosen by the hosts. There will be only two instances, qualifying and final. The couples that go to the final will dance one more round.

4. The jury will be composed by renowned teachers and dancers from U.S tango community.

5. Couples may perform any commonly used figures of “social” tango, including “barridas” (sweeps), “sacadas”, “enrosques” (twists), “ganchos” (hooks), boleos, etc, as well as embellishments always within their own space, without standing in the way of couples dancing around them.  The Jury will focus on the couple's own interpretation in different styles as fundamental to the score.  Dancers cannot break the embrace. It is understood that, in certain figures, the embrace can be flexible.

6. Outfits may be taken into consideration during the judging process.

7. The jury will take in consideration: communication of the couple, elegant walking style, musicality, spontaneity, and vocabulary. The score will be from 1 to 10. In case of a tie, one more tango will be added with the couples that have the same score.

8.The number of registrations will determine the number of couples per round.

9. The organization reserves the right to decide in any other circumstance not contemplated in these regulations.

10. IMPORTANT: IN CASE WE DO NOT GATHER THE MINIMUM OF 10 COUPLES IN EACH CATEGORY, THERE WILL ONLY BE ONE ROUND OF COMPETITION, THE TIME TO COMPETE WILL BE BETWEEN 9.30 PM OR 10 PM.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

Posture, elegance, technique, connection to the partner and walking style will be the main points of evaluation for all dancers. The judges will also take into account the dancer’s own interpretation and how the two build the dance by proposing vocabulary according to situations that arise, such as music, space, errors, etc.

 

JACK AND JILL CATEGORY

Jack and Jill Competition allows individuals to demonstrate their skills in spontaneous social dancing with a variety of random partners.

How does the competition work?

1. Competitors will dance 3 songs per round each for each category with a different. Leader/Follower (randomly chosen). 

2. The number of registrations will determine the number of couples per round.

3. Dancer must enter as a leader or a follower. No switching between lead and follow will be allowed.

4. Dancers cannot break the embrace. It is understood that, in certain figures, the embrace can be flexible (open and close according to the figure), but not throughout the entire piece of music.

5. Couples may perform any commonly used figures of “social” tango, including “barridas” (sweeps), “sacadas”, “enrosques” (twists), “ganchos” (hooks), boleos, etc, as well as embellishments always within their own space, without standing in the way of couples dancing around them.

6. All movements and figures must be made within the space allowed by the couple’s

embrace, so as not to get in the way of the other couples dancing.

7. Couples will  be allowed, if needed, to walk one or two step backwards at most always within the space of the couple. The couple must be aware and respectful of their own and other couples’ space in the round in order not to break the harmony when moving around.

8. It is not allowed to overtake and pass other competitors.

9. Outfits may be taken into consideration during the judging process.

10. IMPORTANT: IN CASE WE DO NOT GATHER THE MINIMUM OF 10 COUPLES IN EACH CATEGORY, THERE WILL ONLY BE ONE ROUND OF COMPETITION, THE TIME TO COMPETE WILL BE BETWEEN 9.30 PM OR 10 PM.

ALL COMPETITORS WILL RECEIVE PROPER INFORMATION.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

1. All dancers will be evaluated individually by the judging panel who will determine a

unique winner for each role and category.

2. Posture, elegance, technique, connection to the partner and walking style will be the main points of evaluation for all dancers. The judges will also take into account the dancer’s own interpretation and their musicality.

3. For the role of LEADER, the judges will give relevance to the ability to navigate the floor, the use of circumstances to develop their vocabulary, walking and personality in dance.

4. For the role of FOLLOWER, the judges will give special relevance to the ability to be an INTERPRETER, fundamentally of the leader and of the music, emphasizing her personality, adaptability and technique in a way that contributes and enriches the tango dance.
